Expansion of European Patent System
25th March 2010
Albania will become a Contracting State to the European Patent Convention on 1 May 2010. European patents can already be extended to Albania by virtue of an extension agreement between the European Patent Office (EPO) and the Government of Albania, but in future Albania will be covered by the blanket designation fee paid in relation to every European patent application. The decision on whether the patent is to enter into force in that country will be taken at the point of grant, as for all other Contracting States.
In a further development, the EPO has opened talks with the Government of Morocco, aimed at the possibility of enabling European patents to take effect in that country, presumably by means of an extension agreement similar to that which currently applies in relation to Albania and a number of other countries.
